Indian sensation Shafali Verma, 18, smashes six boundaries in one over

Shafali Verma is not only the star performer for India at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup; she is the star performer at the competition in general.

The 18-year-old Verma leads and begins the bats for India, and she brings a plethora of knowledge to the competition in South Africa.

Shafali Verma, who was only 15 when she received her first cap for the senior Indian women’s squad, has previously competed in a complete ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and an ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. She was also a part of the Commonwealth Games silver-winning team from the previous summer.

With 74 full international matches for India under her belt despite still being a young player, Verma is a step above her opponents in respect of pedigree (she will turn 19 a day before the final of this tournament).

Additionally, Verma’s talent was evident in the Indian team’s outstanding opening performance at the U19 T20 World Cup. In the powerplay, Verma and her opening partner Shweta Sehrawat scored 70 runs to overtake South Africa’s formidable 166-run total. However, Verma seized control of that Powerplay in the sixth and last over.

Right-handed medium pacer from South Africa Nthabiseng Nini’s first pitch of the over was returned to her for four runs to the boundary.

Verma began to play the final and sixth ball of the over for six, adding 26 runs to the over and moving from 18 off 7 to 44 from 13. Verma had already hit five consecutive boundaries.

Shafali Verma practically had no more to contribute when she was dismissed immediately after for 45, but the harm she did in that one cruel over had prepared the field for the chase and given India control of the needed run rate. India made the pursuit appear easy thanks largely to the outstanding and undefeated 92* that her opening partner Sehrawat produced off just 57 deliveries.

However, Verma’s blitz was decisive in breaking South Africa’s morale and sending a signal to the other championship competitors. The accompanying main months could be historic for a girl with the brightest of possibilities because Verma is scheduled to reunite with the senior team together with her U19 colleague Richa Ghosh after this competition.
