India Weather Highlights: Central team to visit Assam, Meghalaya to assess flood damage

India Weather Highlights: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while taking stock of the flood situation in the northeast, said that an inter-ministerial Central team will visit Assam and Meghalaya to assess damage and extend any help that is required. “The Narendra Modi government stands firmly with the people of flood-hit Assam and Meghalaya in this hour of need,” Shah added.

Southwest monsoon has further advanced into most parts of Madhya Pradesh, remaining parts of Chhattisgarh and coastal Andhra Pradesh, entire Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, most parts of Jharkhand and Bihar, some parts of southeast Uttar Pradesh, and remaining parts of northwest Bay of Bengal today, according to a press release by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

After having had to wait longer to enjoy the monsoon rains, Pune residents on Monday woke up to cloudy skies as officials with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the city could receive some rainfall starting Monday. The department has forecast widespread rainfall with some intermittent intense spells on the day along the district’s ghat areas. Due to overcast sky conditions, Pune city’s humidity levels recorded during the morning hours on Monday were above normal and ranged between 70 – 84 per cent. The minimum temperatures too remained 23 to 26 degrees Celsius over various parts of the city.

The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Sunday with eight more persons losing their lives and over 37 lakh people suffering across 30 districts, an official said. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three persons died due to landslides and five people drowned at different places during the day. With this, the total number of persons losing their lives in this year’s flood and landslides has gone up to 70.
